Undated, but 1880 as per adverts to rear. First edition. Hardback, bound in the original decorative red cloth, with superb gilt and black designs to upper board, gilt titling to spine, printed black decoration to rear board. All edges gilt. 27.5 × 18cm, 398pp , 8pp ads. French text.
Published as part of Hetzel's Voyages Extraordinaires par Jules Verne series, and illustrated by Leon Benett, this book recounts the travels of a group of British colonists in the Raj in the aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 in a wheeled house pulled by a steam-powered mechanical elephant.
This copy is in good condition with some wear. The spine is a little sunned and there is some mottling to the red cloth. Bumping to the corners and edges . The pages are tanned throughout with some pages with foxing. The front and rear pastedowns each have four marks on where an adhesive has been removed.
