Undated, but 1885 as per adverts to rear. Hardback, bound in the original decorative red cloth, with superb gilt and black designs to upper board, gilt titling to spine, printed black decoration to rear board. All edges gilt. 27.5 × 18cm, 434pp [2], 8pp ads. French text.

Published as part of Hetzel's Voyages Extraordinaires par Jules Verne series, and profusely illustrated by Neuville and Riou with both full page engravings and smaller drawings within the text, this book is the classic science fiction tale of three men who embark on an epic journey under the sea with the mysterious Captain Nemo aboard his submarine the Nautilus. Over the course of their fantastical voyage, they encounter the lost city of Atlantis, the South Pole and the corals of the Red Sea, and must battle countless adversaries both human and monstrous.

Condition

This copy is in very good condition for age. The spine is a little sunned and there is a small tear in the fabric of the front joint (1cm) at the base, light rubbing to corners and joints but the gilt decoration to the upper board is crisp. There is one small water mark to the front. The contents are in good order with secure binding. The pages lightly age-toned but clean and the book is free from inscription.
