Relativity, The Special and The General Theory, A Popular Exposition
The first UK edition of Einstein's Theory of Relativity
First UK edition, hardback bound in the original red cloth boards with titling to spine and blindstamped titling to upper board. 19.5 × 12.5cm, xiii, 138pp + 8pp ads.
First English translation of Einstein's theory of relativity. In this work Einstein intended, as far as possible, to give an exact insight into the theory of Relativity to those readers who, from a general and scientific philosophical point of view, are interested in the theory, but who are not conversant with the mathematical apparatus of theoretical physics. The book is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Einstein by Hermann Struck, and five small diagrams with the text.
A rare first edition. This copy is in fair to good condition. The red cloth is sunned to the spine, with some spots of mottled fading to the rear board and a few small marks to the upper board. Previous owner's inscription to the ffep (dated 1920), some browning to the endpapers. The inner binding is secure but strained in a few places. The main body of text in good clean condition, but the publisher's adverts to the rear are corner creased and with a few small tears. The book remains in strong readable condition and in fairly solid shape.
