1893–1896. First editions. Volumes 1, 2, 5 & 6 (of six). Hardbacks, quarter leather with gilt titling to spine. Rebound, reinforced with tape to the hinges. Each 26.5 × 17.5cm, 583pp + 583pp +584pp + 580pp.
These volumes contain mammals (vols 1 & 2), reptiles and fish (v5) and invertebrate animals (v6). Each volume has 12 full-page colour plates, 12 full page b&w illustrations, and numerous drawings within the text.
This is really only a reference set. The bindings are scuffed and rubbed with some weakness to the joints, and vol 6 has a tear to the head of the spine. The contents are in acceptable condition for age, with some spotting and foxing throughout, and to the margins of the colour plates. Vol 6 is the worst hit but is still readable but does have a bit of crinkling to the pages. On the up side, all plates are present according to the plate index and one needn't feel guilty about taking them out to frame...
