This copy belonged to English artist Walter Spindler (1878–1940) and he has signed the book to the half-title. He is perhaps best known for his portraits of Sarah Bernhardt.
La Vie Artistique was a series of books published by French art historian Gustave Geffrey between 1892 and 1903 and described the happening in the art world, this volume includes the Symbolists, Rodin, Rembrandt, Gustave Dore, Jules Cheret and so on. Geffrey was also noted as being one the earliest recorders of the Impressionists.
As mentioned, this copy is lacking the Rodin frontispiece but is otherwise in very good condition. There is some dulling to the vellum but the pages are clean and the binding is secure. Spindler's signature is crisp and clear.
