The Works of Shakespeare, Volume 1
1740, the second Theobald edition, with engravings. Includes The Tempest
Second edition, hardback bound in full leather. Five raised bands to the spine 17 × 9.5cm, , 382pp.
Full title: The Works of William Shakespeare: in Eight Vols (volume 1). Collated with the Oldest Copies, and Corrected: With Notes, Explanatory, and Critical by Mr Theobald.
The first volume of the second Theobald edition, containing lengthy preface and then The Tempest, The Midsummer-Night's Dream, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Merry Wives of Windsor, and Measure for Measure. The book is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare, and each play play has an engraved plate. Lewis Theobald's Shakespeare was first published in 1733 correcting the errors from earlier 18th century editions. This second edition introduced the engravings and was printed for a wider audience.
This copy suffers some heavy wear but retains the charm of an early Shakespeare. The leather is scuffed all over, and the rear board is detached, the front joint is weak but still attached. The pages are age toned throughout, with some small ink stains, finger marks, spots of foxing etc but remains perfectly readable. Possible bookplate removed from the front pastedown.
