First edition, rebound in half-leather by Zaehnsdorf of London. Gilt titling and five raised bands to he spine, marbled endpapers and page edges. 17.5 × 11.5cm, × + 342pp.
This copy belonged to English comedian Gillie Potter (1887–1975) and has his Hogsnorton bookplate to the front pastedown and signature to the ffep.
English travel writer Richard Ford's book on Spain and Spanish life, from the geography and history, transport and travelling, wildlife, food and drink, society, criminals, clerics, music etc etc. This book was a reworking of his earlier two volume A Handbook for Travellers in Spain but John Murray wanted a guide to Spain in a single volume, so Ford cut much of the preliminary text and added new material.
A very good copy for age. There is light scuffing to the edges and joints and a small stain to the leather at the head of the spine but the binding remains intact and the pages are clean, if a little age-toned.
