Fairy Tales; Their Origin and Meaning
with some account of Dwellers in Fairyland. A rare 1878 first edition
First edition, hardback bound in the original brown cloth with gilt titling to spine and upper board. 17.5 × 12cm, 205pp + 40pp ads.
Quite a scarce first edition on the history and folk-lore backgrounds of fairy tales. The chapters are: 1. Origin of Fairy Tales—the Aryan Race: Its Characteristics, its Traditions, and its Migrations, 2. Kindred Tales from Divers Lands, 3. Dwellers in Fairyland: Stories from the East, 4. Dwellers in Fairyland: Teutonic, Scandinavian etc, 5. Dwellers in Fairyland: Celtic, The West Highlands, 6. Conclusion: Some Popular Tales Explained. Index.
A good reading copy. The inner binding is dry and a little cracked with pp81–96 neatly detached. There are some marginal annotations in ink and pencil. The binding has minor bumping and rubbing but the book remains very readable.
