A Collection of Poems by Several Hands, Volume IV
1763, includes an early printing and engraving of Thoams Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard
Early printing, full leather. 17.5 × 11cm, 360pp
An odd volume from Dodsley's collection but notable as it carries an early printing of Thomas Gray's An Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard, with a small engraving as header for the poem showing a funeral procession. Gray's Elegy was first published as a single poem in 1750. The book also contains a wealth of other poems, including Samuel Johnson, Garrick and an engraved plate of music by Thomas Arne (to accompany a William Shenstone ballad).
The leather is heavily worn with both front and back boards detached. However, the contents are in good condition with only a few minor spots of foxing and the text block remains well bound.Sold
