Costumes of the Ancients
Volume 2 only, 1812. With 169 plates
New edition, volume two only (of 2). Half-leather (defective). 24 × 15.5cm, unpaginated.
Not signed as such, but this copy has an interesting recent provenance. It was sold through Sanders of Oxford by Christopher Lennox-Boyd, a authority of mezzotints to William Drummond of The Sabin Gallery in Cork Street, a fellow dealer in prints and illustrated material. The original invoice is enclosed within the book.
The second volume of Hope's ancient costumes, it contains 169 plates of Greek and Roman costume, dress and decoration.
Poor condition, the leather is in very battered condition with half the backstrip (spine) missing and the webbing showing, the hinges heavily worn. The corners are bumped but the contents are in decent condition, with little or no foxing and secure inner binding.
