First edition, hardback. Bound in half-vellum by Truslove and Hanson of Sloane Square, with delightful titling to a leather title label and fine decorative gilt flower design to spine, with date at the base. Top edge gilt, red cloth boards. 23 × 14.5cm, 162pp.
This copy was owned by, and has been signed by, Mary Ashley (1906–1986) daughter of the late Sir Wilfred Ashley "Lord Mount Temple" Her first marriage in 1927 was to captain Alec Cunningham Read who was a distinguished fighter pilot in WW1 The couple were described as "England's wealthiest girl and handsomest man".
A study of carnations, picotees etc, illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. Chapters include the early history of carnation, sweet william and pink, carnations for exhibitions, carnations in town gardens, carnation growing in America, and so on.
This is a very attractive copy. There is one surface scuff to the vellum at the front joint, but is otherwise in good order. The inner binding is sound but the page do have foxing throughout.
