Full title: The Knowledge of Medals: or, Instructions for Those that apply themselves to the Study of Medals both Ancient and Modern. From the French.
A rare early numismatic text by Louis Jobert, a French Jesuit preacher and numismatist. It was originally published as La Science des Medailles in France in 1692. It is a synopsis of numismatic knowledge and bibliography and in its chapters he counsels collectors to consider not only the rarity of a coin but its historic importance and state of preservation. In addition to ancient Greek and Roman coins, Jobert gave considerable attention to Byzantine coins, beginning with the foundation of Constantinople to the city’s conquest by the Ottomans.
This copy is in very good condition. The front joint is cracked and weakening a little but still firmly attached. Light rubbing to the boards' edges. The inner binding is secure. The pages are clean for the most part with occasional foxing and tanning but overall, this is very good copy.
