In his Mowgli stories, Rudyard Kipling expertly interweaves myth, morals, adventure and powerful story-telling. Set in Central India, Mowgli is raised by a pack of wolves and along the way he encounters tiger Shere Kahn, Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. The Jungle Book also includes other stories such as that of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a heroic mongoose and Toomai, a young elephant handler. The Second Jungle Book (Kipling's sequel to The Jungle Book) was first published in 1895, it features five stories about Mowgli and three unrelated stories, with all but one set in India.
The books make an attractive pair. The Jungle Book is faded to the spine and has a small segment missing from the bottom corner opposing the title page with no loss of text. The Second Jungle Book is in lovely crisp condition but does have some spotted foxing to the page edges. Both books carry a school prize label laid across the front pastedown and ffep from Dame Alice Oswald Girls' School in Islington and were presented in 1929.
