Farina; A Legend of Cologne
1857, a rare first edition of George Meredith's second novel
First edition, hardback (defective). 19.5 × 12cm, 244pp.
George Meredith's second novel, a fantasy published after The Shaving of Shagpat. It is a comic and grotesque reworking of medieval legend. The book wasn't a success for Meredith and is considered a scarce title of Victorian fiction.
The binding is in poor condition, with both front and rear boards detached. The leather to the spine has almost totally disintegrated. This copy is ex-library and has a rather lovely label to the front board (Harvey's Library of Sidmouth) with labels to the front pastedown as well. The title page is heavily foxed, the rest of the text with much lesser foxing and the main text block is still bound together well.
Our postage is charged at cost and is measured by the weight of the book. The recent USPS price hikes have meant our rates to the US have had to increase.
