First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 14cm, 158pp.

"When her father was abroad, life for Penelope, who lived in London with her uncle and her governess, was a little dull. But when she was sent some money with which to buy herself a very special present (a beautiful parrot handled umbrella), everything changed and became almost magically exciting. The present led her to a new acquaintance who lived in an extraordinary house, and then, back through time and space, to the childhood of her grown-up friends. In each one she discovered there was something they had always been looking for and which they had never found. How she managed to obtain this one thing for each of them, and with what surprising results, is the story of this book."

This copy is in very good condition. There is a very slight lean to the spine and some tanning to the page edges. The dustwrapper has been price-clipped and is creased to the edges but is now within a protective sleeve.
