Printing Details

Fourth edition, cloth bound board with gilt titling to upper board and string ties to fore-edge. 31 × 25cm, 22pp + 11 (of 12 plates). French text.

This copy has a handwritten note to the front pastedown stating it was donated to the British Astronomical Association in memory of Henry Ellis from his library at Lyme Regis. Henry Ellis (1858–1927) was a British astronomer, and member of the BAA. He specialised in photographing nebulae and made many contributions to the BAA papers.

A very rare French astronomical book based on the James Reynolds' London edition of 1846. It consists of eleven (of twelve) large card lithographic plates of astronomical and meteorological phenomenon, seven of which have small areas cut through and backed with coloured paper which illuminate when held up to the light. Each plate has a written description, and the first 22 pages of text describe the plates.

The plates present are:

1. L'Univers ou notre monde stellaire.

2. Planisphere Celeste contenant les etoiles visibles toute l'annee.

3. Systeme Solaire, Orbites des Planetes.

4. Tableau Comparatif de la Grandeur des Planetes.

5. Le Soleil et ses Principaux Phenomenes.

6. Is missing.

7. Tableau transparent des phases de la Lune.

8. Eclipses.

9. Vicissitudes des Saisons, signes du Zodiac.

10. La Terre et son Atmosphere.

11. Cometes et Aerolithes.

12. Dessins de Phenomenes varies Meteorologiques de l'Atmosphere.

Condition

Fair/good condition. As mentioned, one of the plates is missing (No 6, the Moon / La Lune). The folder is in good order with some wear to the spine and the string tie is present but tatty. The loosely inserted text and plates are in good condition. The text has some light wear to the fore-edge, and the title page has been stamped and accessioned by the British Astronomical Association. The eleven plates are in good order but all have light foxing. Where called for, all coloured paper backings are present. Overall, a good copy, and a rare astronomical title even with the missing plate.
