The Finger Book of Common Prayer
together with The Finger New Testament
Dated c1890 from previous owner's inscription. Both books are bound in full leather, with all edges gilt and gilt titling to spine and upper board, both books are in their original slip cases. They measure 9 × 3cm.
The Finger Book of Common Prayer and New Testament were so-called as they were roughly the size of a finger... they would fit into a pocket or handbag on the way to church but were also part of the Victorians' advancement in printing techniques.
Both books are in very good condition. The Common Prayer has a previous owner's gift inscription from 1890, but the book is in incredibly good condition with clean pages and secure binding. The gilt to the page edges is crisp. There is a tiny nick in the leather to the top of the rear board where it has been taken out of the slipcase. The case shows a little wear but is also in very good condition. The New Testament is also in very good condition but has a little foxing to the prelims, and a small patch of darkening to the top of the upper board. The slipcase has more rubbing and scuffing but remains in good condition. A lovely set.
