Printing Details

First edition, first printing, hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 12.5cm, 160pp.

This profound and striking narrative takes the form of a series of letters from Screwtape, a devil high in the Infernal Civil Service, to his nephew Wormwood, a junior colleague engaged in his first mission on earth trying to secure the damnation of a young man who has just become a Christian. Although the young man initially looks to be a willing victim, he changes his ways and is ‘lost’ to the young devil.

Dedicated to Lewis’s friend and colleague J.R.R. Tolkien, ‘The Screwtape Letters’ is a timeless classic on spiritual conflict and the invisible realities which are part of our religious experience.

The book itself is in very good condition, with clean black cloth boards and title label to spine intact. There is some very minor rubbing and bumping to the spine ends and corners. The pages are tanned a little due to the quality of the wartime economy paper, with occasional spots of foxing to the margins and a small stain to the fore-edge. The book is free from inscription. The dustwrapper is tatty, with significant loss to the spine (the bottom 7cm, and chipped to the top) as well as chipping to the corners, and has foxing / browning all over. It has not been price-clipped (5s) and is now within a protective sleeve.
