The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication
1882, two volumes, a very good set.
Second Edition, (fifth thousand). Two volumes (complete) Hardback, bound in the original green cloth with gilt titling to spine. Brown endpapers and pastedowns. Each 19.5 × 12.5cm, xiv + 473pp, × + 495pp.
Charles Darwin's Variation under Domestication was first published in 1868 and contains detailed information on the domestication of animals and plants but it also contains in Chapter XXVII a description of Darwin's theory of heredity which he called his hypothesis of pangenesis.
A very good set. There is chipping to the cloth at the head of the spines of both volumes, heaviest to volume two. The inner bindings are secure with only the rear hinge of volume 2 showing any light wear. Light spotted foxing to the prelims but the main body of text in each volume is in very good order. Previous owner's inscription to ffep, "Henry Wheeler from C.J.D. 7/3/83". Overall, a decent copy.
