Not signed, but this copy comes from the library of S. Yacht "Cuhona", the yacht built for Sir Andrew Barclay Walker. It is title in gilt to the upper board "S Yacht Cuhona" and has Walker's bookplate to the front pastedown. The yacht's interiors were designed by architects George and Peto in 1882 who decided not to have a maritime theme to the furnishings but to make like a domestic interior. It was considered a fine luxury yacht. Sir Andrew Waker was a Liverpool brewer and councillor who built the Walker Art Gallery.
One of the last novels written by Walter Besant in collaboration with James Rice (the latter died in 1882) and is a rich slice of Victorian life, manners and morals.
Condition
Fair condition. The boards are rubbed and there is surface damage to the parchment to the spine. There are water stains to the fore-edges. However, the book has an interesting provenance and remains very readable.
