The Days of My Life
Rider Haggard's posthumous autobiography
First edition, hardback. Two volumes (complete). Each 24 × 15cm, xxv + 294pp, ix + 286pp.
Rider Haggard's autobiography. It was originally written in 1910/12 but he didn't want it published until after his death, and left allowance for this in his will. It covers his early days, travels, works (Mexico, Transvaal, Egypt), political views etc and the wealth of people he knew (Kipling, Howard Carter, Ian Hamilton, Andrew Lang, RLS...).
In case of interest, these books come from the library of Professor Morton Cohen, Haggard's later biographer. They are unsigned.
A good reading copy. The covers are dulled and faded, and the books have a musty aroma. The inner bindings are secure, the pages age-toned and tanned to the edges but in good order. Each book carries a bookseller's ticket from "Arthur Probsthain, Oriental Bookseller".
