Muriel Spark's first fiction in print, winner of the Observer's Christmas Fiction contest in 1951
First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 20.5 × 13cm, xi +221pp.
This was the first time Muriel Spark's fiction appeared in print. In 1951 she won the Observer's Christmas Fiction contest with The Seraph and the Zambesi, a re-working of a long poem she had written previously. It was the winning entry and is the short story in this collection. Also included are stories by nineteen other runners-up.
The book is in good condition, with some spotted foxing to the page edges and endpapers and to the endpapers. Previous owner's name to the ffep. The dustwrapper is quite tatty, it suffers loss to the spine ends and along the top edge and has been price-clipped but is now within a protective sleeve.
