John D Sedding was a Church architect who was an influential figure in the Arts and Crafts movement. He was a friend of John Ruskin, and was responsible for many additions and restorations to churches in the late Victorian period. This book was published posthumously in 1893 (he died in 1891) and contains his views on architecture and art. Chapters: 1. On the Study of English Architecture, 2. Religion and Art, 3. The Handicrafts in Old Days, 4. Art and Nature in Old Cornwall, 5. Our Arts and Industries, 6. Expression in Architecture.
A rare first edition but also quite a battered one. The green cloth is heavily rubbed to the edges and spine ends and faded. The endpapers, frontispiece and title are foxed and a little tanned though the main body of text is in good order. The inner binding is secure. A previous owner has signed the ffep.
