As a second lieutenant in the East Lancashire Regiment, the author was twice wounded in the grim battles of the Somme, Passchendaele and the spring offensive of 1918. During his two and a half years on the Western Front, he progressed from a schoolboy fresh out of his schools OTC to a seasoned soldier, not only in fact but also in outlook, and he describes how it felt to be an inexperienced officer leading groups of battle-weary men. This is a fascinating autobiography of a young officer on the Western Front and his transformation from idealistic schoolboy to a battle-hardened officer. Illustrated with personal an official photographs.
