The author, Captain (later Admiral) Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, 1st Baron Mountevans, had a distinguished career as a Naval officer but also sailed with Captain Robert Falcon Scott on his two Antarctic Expeditions, being second-in-command of the Terra Nova on the ill-fated second expedition.
