The First World War memoirs of "Evans of the Broke", the author's nickname after the Battle of Dover Strait in 1917 when two Royal Navy destroyers defeated a superior force of German Kaiserliche Marine torpedo boats. The author, Captain (later Admiral) Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, 1st Baron Mountevans, had a distinguished career as a Naval officer but also sailed with Captain Robert Falcon Scott on his two Antarctic Expeditions, being second-in-command of the Terra Nova on the ill-fated second expedition.
The blue cloth is quite heavily worn, with scuffs and bumps to all edges and fraying to the corners and spine ends. There are patches of fading as well. Internally, the binding is secure but the pages are tanned throughout. Previous owner's name to the ffep (N Kynaston Gaskell, an author) and his pencil note on the half-title stating Evans signed this book on 28th December 1923.
