Illustrated daily army life...
First edition, hardback bound in the original green cloth with printed titling and design to spine and upper board. 20 × 12.5cm, 157pp + ads.
A collection of dialogues on the daily happenings of later 19th century Army life, or as the author writes in his introduction, "the pinches of salt and pepper that go to season the solid military ration". Some are set in India where the author served in the Intelligence Department at Simla. Though better known as a food writer an journalist, Newnham-Davis served in the army in South Africa (with the Imperial Mounted Infantry where he was decorated and twice mentioned in dispatches), the Straits Settlements, China and India.
A good copy. There is some rubbing to the cloth and fading to the spine. The inner binding is secure, if a little pulled in places and the pages are clean.
