Hand-Book of London, Past and Present
1850; an alphabetical listing of streets, buildings, bridges...
New edition, revised and corrected. Hardback, bound in the original cloth with gilt titling to spine. 19.5 × 13cm, liv +602pp, 16pp ads.
A rare guide to London, alphabetically listing streets, bridges, parks buildings etc and giving their history. The 54 page introduction writes about the history and events in London's history, architecture, the London season, hotel and tavern dinners, coffee houses, street lighting, cemeteries, city gates, governance, breweries, lengths of principle streets etc etc.
This copy with one plan (the Great Fire of London) and one folding plan (Parliament).
Good condition for age. The cloth binding is a little sunned and frayed to the joints, the spine is darkened and a previous owner has written 1850 in pen. The inner binding is sound and the pages are clean, if a little tanned. There is some inoffensive underlining of names in the book and one section of the introduction has a fair number of marginal Xs. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown (John Westerby Tasker). The book however remains perfectly readable.
