The Transit of Venus (Signed copy)
Signed and dedicated by Shirley Hazzard
First US edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16cm, 337pp.
Signed and and dedicated by Shirley Hazzard to the ffep, "For dear Mort [Morton N Cohen, the Lewis Carroll scholar] and dear Dick [Richard Swift], beloved and admired friends of Shirley Hazzard—who inscribes this with so much gratitude for their long friendship, on 30 April 1980. New York".
Caro, gallant and adventurous, is one of two Australian sisters who have come to post-war England to seek their fortunes. Courted long and hopelessly by young scientist, Ted Tice, she is to find that love brings passion, sorrow, betrayal and finally hope. The milder Grace seeks fulfilment in an apparently happy marriage. But as the decades pass and the characters weave in and out of each other's lives, love, death and two slow-burning secrets wait in ambush for them.
The book is in good condition with a little dry water marking along the bottom edge of the boards and heavy offsetting to the rfep where some relevant newspaper clippings have been laid in, the dustwrapper is only fair with a more visible water stain to the bottom edge and wear to the spine ends, corners and top edge. However, it has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
