Subtitled 'The fascinating and informal chronicle of the American woman's struggle to stand on her own two feet', this is a readable and entertaining popular history of the feminine ideal in America begins with the letters and diaries of foreign visitors such as de Toqueville and Mrs. Trollope, and continues with the books American women read (primarily Gothic novels and sentimental verse), and the lives of the women themselves. The author was an American author and journalist described by the New York Times as a forgotten literary treasure.
The book is in very good condition, the dustwrapper is also in good condition but has a sun-faded spine. However, this is now in a protective sleeve and has not been price-clipped.
