Kelly's Directory of Kensington 1895
including Notting Hill, Brompton & Knightsbridge, with map
Hardback, bound in the original red cloth with gilt titling to spine and upper board. 19 × 12.5cm, × + 482pp + 52pp ads. Folding map loose at rear.
A scarce London Kelly's Directory. This one comprises alphabetical lists of streets, private residents, and tradesmen, with official information and a visitors' guide to pleasure an health resorts. The area is defined to the title page as "the district extends from Kensal Green, North, to Fulham Road, South, and from Kensington Gardens, East to Shepherd's Bush and Hammersmith, West". As well as the wealth of information on residents and trades, there are also a good number of advertisements to the endpapers and prelims, and on a few coloured sheets dividing the sections of the book.
This copy is in good plus condition, particularly for a Kelly's which usually suffer from heavy wear. The map is present but detached. It opens cleanly but has several small tears to the folds. The red cloth binding is in good order but a little tanned to the spine with a small white stain to the bottom of the spine. The inner binding is secure for the main body of text, but one page of the front adverts is neatly detached and the paper the adverts is one is a bit dry and brittle with some small loss to the page edges. The hinges are starting but still secure. The book also has a stamp to the map and title page from the Law Society. Overall, however, a very well preserved and scarce Kelly's title.
