The Ingoldsby Legends
1874, full leather and illustrated by Cruikshank, Leech & Tenniel
Full leather hardback, with five raised bands to the spine and gilt birds and armour to spine, with stylised titling and gilt bird to upper board. All edges gilt. 23 × 17cm, xiv + 514pp.
A collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry, compiled by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor (the pen-name of Richard Barham, a Kentish clergyman). The stories are based on real legends and mythology but are mostly deliberately humorous parodies or pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry.
A good reading copy. The leather is scuffed to all edges and joints and rubbed to the corners. The heaviest wear is to the top 5cm of the front joint. The inner binding is sound bu the pages are lightly foxed throughout.
