This copy has an autograph note and signature of Geoffrey Cather neatly paste in to the ffep. It reads "As a small recognition of many kindnesses, Geoffrey Cather". The owner of the book, H H Hardy, has signed the book from Rugby School in 1908 and annotated Cather's note stating "Killed in Action, 1916. Awarded the V.C." Geoffrey Cather (b. 1890) was educated at Rugby until his father's death in 1908. During the Great War, he served with the 9th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers. On the first day of the Somme and on the 2 July 1916, he rescued and tended to wounded men in No Man's Land, but was killed on his third outing. The owner, Henry Harrison Hardy, was a master at Rugby who went on to be headmaster of Cheltenham and the father of actor Robert Hardy.
The second series of Palgrave's much loved Golden Treasury which collects "the best songs and lyrical poems in the English language and arranged with notes."
A very nice copy. There is some tanning to the spine and light surface wear to the vellum but this is in otherwise good order. The pages are clean and the inner binding is sound.
