Not signed as such but with the leather book plate of Florence and Edward Kaye, who collected together a distinguished library of crime and mystery books.
A superb psychological crime novel based on an unsolved murder of 1872. Set in Victorian London, this thriller centres around the murder of a prostitute and was filmed in 1947 with Peggy Cummins and Victor Mature.
Condition
A fair copy. The head of the spine is chipped, and both front and back hinges are cracked but the book remains well bound. The spine is sun-faded and the Kaye's bookplate has offset to the opposing page. Nevertheless, this remains a rare title in the first edition state.
