Full title: The Young Shetlander, or Shadow over the Sunshine. Being Life and Letters of Thomas Edmonston, Naturalist on Board H.M.S. "Herald"
The life and letters of Thomas Edmonston (1825–1846), a naturalist born in Buness, Unst to a prominent Shetland family. He compiled the first known list of Shetland plants and birdlife, and was appointed Professor of Botany at Anderson's University in Glasgow at the age of just 20. He was appointed naturalist on board HMS Herald, on a journey retracing the voyage of HMS Beagle, and Charles Darwin became a frequent correspondent. He died in a shooting accident in South America aged 21.
Good condition but with some wear. The green cloth is lightly rubbed to the edges and spine ends but is generally sound. The pages are clean but the inner binding is pulled in places (no pages are loose and still is quite firm but needs a little bit of gentle handling).
