The Ingoldsby Legends
1887, high quality half-leather binding with small gilt skull to spine
The Carmine Edition, hardback rebound in half leather with two raised bands, gilt decoration (including skull in top hat), and titling in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. 21.5 × 15cm, xiii , 546pp.
A collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry, compiled by Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor (the pen-name of Richard Barham, a Kentish clergyman). The stories are based on real legends and mythology but are mostly deliberately humorous parodies or pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry.
A lovely copy. The rebind is of a high quality (though unsigned), there is a small chip to head of the spine and the front joint is starting at the head of the spine to about 1.5cm but is still firmly bound. The leather is in very good condition, minor rubbing to the edges. There is some light foxing to the prelims but the main body of text is in good, clean condition and all illustrations are present. There is a neat gift inscription to the ffep. A very attractive copy.
