The Ghosts of Versailles
An examination of the Moberly-Jourdain Ghosts of Petit Trianon incident in 1911
First edition, hardback in dustwrapper. 22.5 × 15cm, 313pp.
A study of events when Misses Moberly and Jourdain describe a 1901 visit they made to the Petit Trianon, a small château in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles where they claimed to have seen the gardens as they had been in the late eighteenth century as well as ghosts, including Marie Antoinette and others. Their story caused a sensation and was subject to much ridicule. This book examines the ladies, their backgrounds, the adventure itself (known as the Moberly–Jourdain incident or the Ghosts of Petit Trianon or Versailles, and in French les fantômes du Trianon / les fantômes de Versailles), and whether it was adream or real etc. Illustrate with photographs, maps etc
A good copy. The book has light foxing to the pages but remains well-bound. The dustwrapper is edgeworn but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
