Sir Robert Walpole, The Making of a Statesman
A very good copy of this highly-regarded biography
First edition, second impression, hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm, xv + 407pp.
The first volume of J H Plumb's highly-regarded biography and study of Robert Walpole, the eighteenth century politician who became the first Prime MInister of Britain. It begins with Walpole's entrance into politics as a debt-encumbered Norfolk squire and ends with his emergence from the South Sea Bubble as the King's first ministerand as one of the richest and most powerful men in the land. Walpole is presented against the background of his age with his virtues and vices, achievements and shortcomings all brilliantly demonstrated in action.
A very good copy, with some spotted foxing to the page edges. The dustwrapper has some light brasions to the wrapper but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
