Hardback, bound in full leather with five raised bands and gilt titling to spine, also with an attractive gilt decoration to spine and upper board, all edges gilt. 19.5 × 13.5cm, 159pp + 50 plates.

Set in the Trossachs region of Scotland, it comprises six cantos, each of which concerns the action of a single day. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men, Roderick Dhu, James Fitz-James, and Malcolm Graeme, to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots and the highland clans. Illustrated with 50 plates (8 in coloour) and a small fold-out map to rear.


An attractive copy but the front joint is heavily scuffed, with lighter scuffing elsewhere to the binding. The pages are clean and the binding is secure. previous owner's inscription to the half-title.
