Full title: The History and Antiquities of Rochester and its Environs, To which is added, a Description of the Towns, Villages, Gentlemen's Seats, and Ancient Buildings, Situate on, or near the Road from London to Margate, Deal, and Dover.
A history of Rochester in Kent, dealing with the main buildings and historical events, docks, churches, schools etc and ends with a brief description of some of the towns on the roads to London and Margate from Rochester (Deptford, Dartford, Dover and so on). The book is illustrated with a fold-out map (Rochester from the bridge to the Victualling Office by E Baer, surveyor) as frontis, and five plates (Castle, Cathedral, The Ancient Cenventual Seal, Ruins of the Charter House, the City Seals).
An attractive copy. The binding is in very good condition, and the inner binding is very tight. The map has some tears and has been reinforced with white tape to the rear. The book is from an Institutional Library and is stamped to the back of the map, title page, first page of text but these aren't intrusive or offensive. Previous owner's contemporary signature to title page.
