The History of the Moore Family (Signed copy)
Irish genealogy, with two letters and one hand-drawn pedigree by The Countess of Drogheda
Printed by Ponsonby and Gibbs at the University Press, Dublin, 1906. First (and only) edition, hardback, bound in the original black cloth with gilt titling to spine and gilt crest to upper board. Top edge gilt, outer and lower edges untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. 26 × 19.5cm, 143pp + six linen backed fold-out family trees to rear.
This copy comes with two hand-written letters from The Countess of Drogheda, both on Moore Abbey, Monasterevin headed paper and written a short time after publication. They are both addressed to a Miss Bathurst. The first is confirming that the binder will send a copy of the book and thanks for kind words, the second refers to the book, and how the author wishes it could have been better with fewer gaps, and includes a small hand-written Tullamore pedigree.
A detailed genealogical history of the Moore family. It is in two parts, the first being Mellifont, which contains details on the Moore family in Kent (1066–1560); Sir Edward Moore (1560–1601); Notes on the Moore Pedigree by G D Burtchall; Sir Garrett Moore, First Viscount Moore of Drogheda (1566–1627); Moore of Drumbanagher (1627–1834); Charles, Second Viscount Moore of Drogheda (1627–1643); Henry, First Earl of Drogheda (1643–1675); Charles, Second Earl of Drogheda (1675–1679); Henry Third Earl of Drogheda (1679–1714); and Henry, Fourth Earl of Drogheda (1714–1727). The second part is Monasterevin, and details the Marquis of Drogheda line until the Marquisate became extinct. The chart pedigrees at the rear consist: 1. Moore Family in Kent, 2. Moore Family in Ireland, 3. Moore of Drumbanagher; 4. Clifford Family; 5 & 6. Loftus Family.
The book is illustrated with 31 tissue-guarded plates of portraits, places, banners etc, and all are present.
This copy is in very good condition. There is some sun fading to the spine and the front board along the joint, there is some rubbing to the corners. Both front and rear boards have a few dark marks. Internally, the pages are in very good condition and the book is free from inscription. The pages edges are tanned where untrimmed, the inner binding is secure. The chart pedigrees have been folded back quite scruffily and are creased along and around the folds but are in good condition, though the final one has a large and old grease mark to the outer edge. Overall, a very good copy of this rare title.
