Printing Details

Undated [1923]. First edition, hardback bound in the original paper covered boards with paper title label to spine and original onion skin wrapper. 18 × 12.5cm, 63pp.

Gleanings by an Undergraduate was Scottish poet William Soutar's first book, financed by his father and published anonymously whilst he was studying English at Edinburgh University. The poems were highly regarded by Hugh MacDiarmid.

Condition

The book is in very good condition, but has a few dent to the boards edges and has been owned by a smoker as there is a tobacco odour (quite deep and rich...), which will disappear over time. The onion skin wrapper suffers loss to the spine but is a rare survival.
