This copy has been signed twice by Luigi Capuana to Giovanni Verga. Firstly to the ffep, "A Giovanni Verga, affectionamente Luigi Capuana, Roma, 22 giugno 1885", and again to the portrait frontispiece. Both inscriptions are in ink.
A rare first edition collection of short stories from Luigi Capuana, comprising Mostruosita, La Mula, Povero dottore!, Don Peppantonio, Evoluzione, Lo Sciancato, Raffinatezza, Comparatico, Bagni di sole, Maestro Cosimo, and Nota.
This is an important book as it is signed from one of the most important advocates of the Italian Verist movement to another. Verismo was an Italian literary movement that started in the 1870s and lasted to the first years of the twentieth century, Capuana's novel Giacinta is regarded as the manifesto of Verismo.
This book is in good condition but with some wear. The binding is rubbed to the spine ends and boards edges, and the pages are comprehensively foxed throughout. The inner binding is in good order but the rear hinge is starting. The book remains in good readable condition and comes with a remarkable literary provenance.
