Printing Details

First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. Top edge dyed red. 19.5 × 13cm, 266pp.

A novel set in the future (from 1958). From the dustwrapper, "The scene is Quebec. World War III is in progress, England has been occupied by the Russians, and the exiled government is in Canada. Among the exiles are Bernard Austen, a senior civil servant, and his friend Alan Shore, a scientist who has done more than anyone else to make the intercontinental rocket able to attack Europe with hydrogen bombs. The load of moral responsibility is heavy on Alan; but this is not an exploitation of the now familiar theme of 'the scientist with a conscience'. Rather it is a dramatized contest between the forces of destruction and those of life exemplified in Bernard's love affair with a young Canadian girl... "

The book itself is in very good condition, there is light tanning to the endpapers and a little mustiness but the pages are clean and the binding is strong. The dustwrapper is quite heavily chipped and creased to the edges but has not been price-clipped and is now within a protective sleeve.
