Printing Details

First edition, hardback bound in the original cloth with laid-in woodcut illustration to front board. 21 × 14cm, 301pp.

This copy belonged to Marni Hodgkin, the American children's book editor who was regarded as one of the notable and influential children's book editors of the 1960s. It has been signed by her to the ffep as Marion de Kay Rous in 1938 (as she was before her marriage to Alan Hodgkin).

A novel set during the period of one month. The book opens in a small American town with a snowstorm, and for the first two-thirds, the protagonist (a doctor) is in charge of both events and his life, but an epidemic starts to take control...

A good solid copy. The board are rubbed to the joints and board edges but the binding is secure. The pages are clean if a little age-toned.
