Histoire Poetique de Charlemagne
1865 First French edition, in half-leather by Riviere
First French edition, hardback, half-leather binding by Riviere & Son, with five raised bands and gilt titling to spine and marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt, outer and lower edges untrimmed. 24.5 × 16cm, xvii, + 513pp.
A rare and finely bound early first edition from the French scholar and writer Gaston Paris. This book is his study of Charlemagne, the ninth century King of the Franks, and in particular his influence on the romantic poetry of the age. Gaston Paris presented his research and this title at the Sorbonne in 1865 where it drew immediate and intense interest from his fellow scholars.
This is a very good copy. The leather is in good, clean order and the boards are very tidy. The inner binding is secure apart from a little weakening at the title page. The pages are clean with just occasional and inoffensive marginal annotations. A scarce book in very good condition.
