This copy has been signed by the artist, S Arcos, to the half title page, "A mon ami et compagnon de recherches, H Butler Clarke, son devoue et reconnaisant, S Arcos, 1894". Santiago Arcos (also known as S. Arcos, Santiago Arcos y Megalde, Megalde Y Arcos) (1865–1912) was a Spanish artist who studied in Paris under Leon Bonnat and Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta. He has signed this book to Henry Butler Clarke (1863–1904) who was an Oxford academic and authority on Spain. This book also carries the bookplate of St Johns College, Oxford, which bought his library after his death.
A scarce book on deer hunting in France, with chapters on fox-hunting in England, and wild deer in Devon and Somerset, the roe, drag-hunting etc. The book is wonderfully illustrated throughout by Arcos with black and white pen and ink vignettes and sketches of hunting scenes.
This copy is in very good condition. There is some tanning to the spine with commensurate fading to the gilt titling, and rubbing to the spine ends and boards edges. The inner binding is secure and firmly attached but is pulled a little in places. The pages have light and intermittent foxing throughout the book but are generally clean. A scarce book, but especially so with the artist's signature.
