The Book of the Indians of North America
Illustrating Their Manners, Customs, and Present State. 1845, 1st ed.
First edition, hardback, bound in the original cloth boards with new spine in leather with contrasting title label and gilt titling. 21 × 14cm. , x, 283pp, 24pp ads.
A rare and quite fascinating first edition of John Frost's study of the Indians of North America. The chapters cover all aspects of their lives and history, eg wigwams, hunting, tribes, names, Black Hawk, smoking the pipe, wars, games, straw dance etc with the last section of the book being more the new settlers and missionary's relationship with the Indians. The book is illustrated throughout, with a few full page drawings and many more smaller ones within the text.
A good reading copy. The rebinding of the spine has meant that the binding is very tight. There is some water staining to the page edges, mostly to the front and back of the book, the main body of text is in good condition. The endpapers and pastedowns are heavily browned. The boards are a little bumped. There is one small issue with the pagination, the contents stop at page × and the text starts at page 13 so one leaf is missing which was probably a blank or author's note.
